Constable Street has been considered in two sections, Riddiford Street to Coromandel Street and Coromandel Street to Alexandra Road. Both sections have two options each.

The impacts on bus stops, intersections, pedestrian crossings and driveways will be detailed in the next stage of design and available for feedback in November.

Constable Street - Coromandel Street to Alexandra Road

Option A: Kerbside bike lane uphill, downhill sharrow, parking both sides.
ConstableAlexandra A

Why Option A?

The uphill kerbside bike lane improves safety for people on bikes and encourages less confident riders to use the route. The downhill sharrow markings increase driver awareness of people on bikes. This is a compromised design to retain parking, with minimum separation between parked cars and the bike lane. This option retains more parking than Option B.

Impacts
  • No change to parking

  • No footpath changes

  • Traffic lanes width reduces from 4.5m to 3.0m

  • Bike lane protected by raised buffer
  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate increase

Option B - Kerbside bike lane uphill, downhill sharrow, parking one side only

ConstableAlexandra B

Why Option B?

The uphill kerbside bike lane improves safety for people on bikes and encourages less confident riders to use the route. The downhill sharrow markings increase driver awareness of people on bikes. This option removes more parking than Option A but has wider traffic lanes.

Impacts
  • Approximately 5 parking spaces lost on the northern side of the road

  • No footpath changes

  • Traffic lanes width reduces from 4.5m to 3.8m

  • Bike lane protected by raised buffer
  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate increase
