There are two sections of Rongotai Road. The town centre section has three options and outside the town centre has two options.

The impacts on bus stops, intersections, pedestrian crossings and driveways will be detailed in the next stage of design and available for feedback in November.

Section 2: Outside town centre

Option A - Kerbside bike lane on both side, parking both sides
RongotaiOutsideCentre A

Why Option A?

The kerbside bike lane improves safety for people on bikes, and encourages less confident riders to use the route. The kerbside bike path allows traffic speeds to be maintained at current levels. This is a compromised design to retain parking, with minimum separation between parked cars and the bike lane. This option retains the parking on both sides of the road.

Impacts
  • Current footpath width retained

  • Bike lane protected by raised buffer
  • Traffic lanes reduced in width from 4.2m to 3.2m on both sides

  • Vehicle access through the median may be removed.
  • No changes to parking

  • The existing planted median could increase in width from 10.7m to 12.9m

  • Wider parking bays provided for buses to use as stops

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate to high increase

Option B - Bike lane both sides, parking both sides

Why Option B?

The bike lane improves safety for people on bikes, and encourages less confident riders to use the route. Traffic speeds would need to be reduced to improve safety. This option retains the parking on both sides of the road.

Impacts
  • Current footpath width retained

  • Traffic lanes reduced in width from 4.2m to 3.2m on both sides

  • No changes to planted median

  • Vehicle access through the median may be removed.
  • No changes to parking

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate increase
