There are two sections of Rongotai Road. The town centre section has three options and outside the town centre has two options.

The impacts on bus stops, intersections, pedestrian crossings and driveways will be detailed in the next stage of design and available for feedback in November.

Section 1: Town centre

RongotaiCentre 0Existing

Option A - Bike lane both sides, no parking
RongotaiCentre A

Why Option A?

The bike lanes will increase driver awareness of people on bikes. Removing the parking will separate people on bikes and cars, which will encourage less confident riders to use the route.

Impacts
  • No changes to the footpath

  • Traffic lanes altered to both be 3.8m wide

  • Current median strip retained

  • Provisions for driveways, bus stops and off street parking will need to be made

  • Approximately 25 parking spaces removed

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate increase

Option B - Kerbside bike lane both sides, parking both sides

RongotaiCentre B

Why Option B?

The kerbside bike lane improves safety for people on bikes, and encourages less confident riders to use the route. This option retains the parking on both sides of the road, unlike Option A and C.

Impacts
  • No changes to the footpath

  • Bike lane protected by raised buffer
  • Traffic lanes altered to both be 3.2m wide

  • Median strip removed

  • Provisions for driveways and, bus stops and off-street parking will need to be made

  • No changes to parking

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate to high increase

Option C - Kerbside bike lane both sides, parking one side only

RongotaiCentre C

Why Option C?

The kerbside bike lane improves safety for people on bikes, and encourages less confident riders to use the route. This is a compromised design to retain parking, with minimum separation between parked cars and the bike lane. This option retains the parking on only one side of the road, unlike Option A.

Impacts
  • No changes to the footpath

  • Traffic lanes altered to both be 3.2m wide

  • The existing flush median is reduced in width from 2.7m to 2.0m

  • Provisions for driveways, bus stops and off street parking will need to be made

  • Approximately 14 parking spaces removed on north side of road

  • Likely uptake by people on bikes: Moderate to high increase
