Proposed solutions: One-way section of Wilson Street - kerbside contra-flow bike lane with a buffer. Two-way sections of Wilson Street and Coromandel Street - sharrow road markings.

WilsonSt Hero Combined

Why this solution?

This solution provides a good biking connection between Newtown and Kilbirnie. The proposed design is appropriate for this relatively quiet one-way street with less traffic and low vehicle speeds. Choosing this option means we don’t need to develop the Constable Street option (Riddiford Street to Coromandel Street) at this stage.

Impacts:
  • On the one-way section of Wilson Street, 15 parking spaces would be removed on the southern side of the road. Four angled parking bays would be added at the Daniell Street intersection. There are no parking changes proposed on the two-way section.
  • On the one-way section of Wilson Street, the width of the traffic lane would be narrowed slightly from 3.2m to 3m.
  • Designating the short section of footpath at the end of Wilson Street (next to Riddiford Street) as a shared path.
  • Putting in a new section of shared path next to the footpath behind the new angled parking at Daniell Street.
