Southern area routes will connect the southern suburbs with local centres, schools and the central city. The current route runs through the southern suburbs from Shorland Park in Island Bay, and future sections will connect the route through to Pukeahu National Memorial Park.

The Council will soon be starting work with the community to develop options for the connection to Pukeahu in the central city. This is being funded as part of the national Urban Cycleways Programme.

Island Bay to city

The Island Bay to city route is made up of four sections:

Why a cycleway is a good idea

The southern suburbs’ population, projected growth and geography all mean that improvements to bike routes will provide connections into the city centre. This is one of five key routes we plan to develop to give Wellingtonians more choice in how they get around.

The Parade in Island Bay was the first section of the Island Bay to City Cycleway. It connects a lot of great local destinations, and safer lanes here allow less confident riders, young and old, to travel around their community by bike.

Our research shows that providing high quality cycling infrastructure would almost triple the number of people cycling in the southern corridor. This would reduce congestion on the roads during peak travel times making it faster for everyone to get around.

We commissioned a feasibility study to find the most efficient route through Island Bay for people on bikes. From this, we found that The Parade was the most logical and desirable place to start. Better integration with the road and making cycle lanes more consistent will reduce confusion, increasing safety.

Southern connections

The potential routes through to the city are still to be determined.
