The second section of the Southern cycleway will run from Wakefield Park in Berhampore to John Street in Newtown.
Initial investigations and discussions have shown that there is a huge number of options and possibilities, each with advantages and disadvantages.
Finding the best option for sharing the limited space in this area requires sharing of information, creative thinking and compromise.
What we've done
We commissioned research (from Opus, Studio Pacific and Red Design) and sought informal feedback at community festivals. We also talked to groups such as Cycle Aware Wellington and the Urban Activation Lab (Red Design) who advocate for improvements in this area. There were too many options to run full consultations on each one.
This map summarises route ideas we’ve received over the last few years. Some of them are endorsed by individuals, some by groups, and all have merit in different ways.
We consulted a citizens' advisory panel to help narrow down the possibilities to a few most promising routes which will make cycling through this area safer and easier. The panel produced and presented a final report to Council. The Council has yet to decide how this section should be improved.
