To help us narrow down the potential options for the Berhampore / Newtown section of the cycleway, we formed a citizen’s advisory panel (77KB PDF). They provided some well-considered community input early in the planning process.

Recommended cycling routes

The panel recommended two cycling routes, and a possible future third route.

The panel's task

The panel's task was to identify the most promising routes, and ways to develop them.

Their recommended routes should:

  • encourage more people to cycle
  • make it safer and easier to cycle in Newtown and Berhampore.

The routes and facilities had to be practical, legal and take the needs of other transport users into account.

Panel deliberations

The panel developed its own criteria for considering options. The panel was given research and evidence about road design and New Zealand law and standards from traffic engineering experts. They also heard presentations from individuals and groups about how people like to move and live in Berhampore and Newtown.

Panel members also toured the area by van and on foot.

An experienced independent facilitator helped the group assess 15–20 possible cycling routes (775KB PDF) and develop a network map or blueprint for the area.

The panel's recommendations

On 28 July 2014, the panel members presented its recommendations (460KB PDF) to Councillors and Council staff. On 21 August 2014, these recommended routes were considered by the Council’s Transport and Urban Development Committee.
