Manual cordon counts have been carried out from 7am to 9am during one week in March every year since 2000. This count is done in the same week every year regardless of the weather.
It provides useful information, and shows a gradual increase in numbers over the past 20 years, but doesn’t show how many people are using these routes at other times of the day and year.
The cordon surveys involve people with clipboards manually recording the numbers of people on foot and bikes entering and leaving the CBD at 28 separate locations over 5 consecutive weekdays. However, some years, because of bad weather, it has not been possible to count on all 5 days.
