The Evans Bay route is a key connection between the city and the eastern suburbs. It runs along Evans Bay Parade from Carlton Gore Road on Oriental Parade to Cobham Drive in Kilbirnie.

The impacts on bus stops, pedestrian crossings and driveways will be detailed in the next stage of design and available for comment in November.

Weka 0Existing

Option A - Two-way seaward-side bike path. The path is separated from the traffic lane and the footpath.
Weka A

Why Option A?

This option involves few intersections crossings and a low number of driveway crossings. More parking would be maintained than option B. The width of the bike lane would mean people cycling could overtake if there were no oncoming riders. This option has a lower cost than Option B, however the likely uptake by people on bikes is similar.

Impacts
  • 330-370 parallel parking spaces maintained (reduced from the 460 spaces currently provided)
  • Painted median strip removed
  • Traffic lanes narrowed to minimum width of 3.2m and wider where necessary to allow for wider vehicles.

Option B - One-way bike lane on each side of the road, separated from traffic lanes and the footpath
Weka B

Why Option B?

This option may be preferred by people who usually cycle on the road. It's easier for riders to move between the traffic lane and bike lane. This option has a higher cost than Option A, however the likely uptake by people on bikes is similar.

Impacts
  • 290-330 parallel parking spaces maintained (reduced from the 460 spaces currently provided)
  • Traffic lanes narrowed to minimum width of 3.2m and wider where necessary to allow for wider vehicles.
  • Painted median strip removed
  • Greater potential conflict with turning vehicles at side road intersections and driveways for people riding in the northbound bike lane
